Foot the bill：to pay for something, esp. something expensive. This expression may well go back to the beginning of the printing era. It has to do with settling accounts as well.中文释义：“Foot the bill”是一句地道的英国俗语，在15世纪打字机刚出的年代，通常会将顶部的一页称为头页，最底部的一页称为脚页。商家会将顾客的所有消费列在脚页，结算费用的时候，顾客直奔脚页即表示埋单。鉴于英语语言允许名词作动词用的特性，“foot”这个名词就有了“to foot”的动词意思，即表示结账、埋单。
